Shukla Phanta National Park was managed as a hunting reserve at the beginning in1969. It has
been gazetted as a Wildlife Reserve in 1976 and as National Park currently (2017), covering an
area of 305 sq. km. It lies in the extreme south-western section of Nepal’s Terai in Kanchanpur
District. The National Park shares a common boundary with the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in
the south and west which isformed by the Mahakali (Sarda)river, a majortributary of the Ganges.
It is bordered on the eastern side by the Chaudhar River and to the north by a forest belt and
cultivations. A total of 24 mammal species are recorded by Schaff (1978b), a total of 350 species
of birds of which 180 are breeding species (Inskipp, 1989), Bhatt and Shrestha (1977) provide an
annotated list of 14 species of fish, Schaaf (1978b) recorded 10 species of ectoparasites and biting
flies. Although, the area of the National Park is small, it supports a wide range of biodiversity
which is nationally and globally important. The vegetation types primarily include sal forest, sal
savanna, which is part of continuum between climax forest and grassland that is maintained by
fire and floods. The National Park supports the largest population of Bengal florican Houbaropsis
bengalensis.

Itinerary

  • Day 01Kathmandu to Shuklaphanta National Park

    • Depart from Kathmandu early in the morning (7 o’clock).
    • Breakfast en route at a local restaurant.
    • Arrive in Butwal (approximately 6-7 hours’ drive).
    • Check into Asian Hotel and freshen up.
    • Explore Butwal market, enjoy dinner, and stay overnight at the hotel

  • Day 02Butwal to Mahendranagar

    • Early breakfast and drive towards Mahendranagar, enjoying scenic views of lush green
    hills and rivers.
    • Lunch en route at a local restaurant or café.
    • Explore the scenic view of Karnali River.
    • Check into Hotel Chetan or Hotel 9-11.
    • Explore MNR market, enjoy dinner, and stay overnight at the hotel.

  • Day 03Wildlife Exploration

    • Breakfast and journey towards Shuklaphanta National Park.
    • Early morning jeep safari or guided nature walk to spot wildlife (e.g., deer, elephants,
    various bird species).
    • Lunch at your accommodation or a designated spot.
    • Spend the whole day in Shuklaphanta National Park.
    • Return to the hotel for dinner and stay overnight.

  • Day 04Dodhara Chandani Bridge

    • Breakfast at the hotel and journey towards Dodhara Chandani Bridge (30 min from
    hotel).
    • Explore Asia’s top suspension bridge.
    • Lunch at a local riverside café or cottage.
    • Enjoy the view of Mahakali River; swimming is an option.
    • Return to Kathmandu at 6 PM, with dinner en route.

  • Day 05Return to Kathmandu

    • Breakfast at Mugling or Naubise.
    • Arrive in Kathmandu Valley by 11 AM.
